BERLIN Office mug

It is said that the future begins at the moment the present ends. With BERLIN tomorrow has been designed in finest porcelain. Its multifunctional design, which was developed in 1996 by Enzo Mari and the KPM Master Workshop succeeds in achieving something, which can otherwise only be accomplished by the eponymous city: to create something beautiful out of the union of opposites.

Berlin Design Selection in Ventura Lambrate: Participants

The Berlin Milano 2014 exhibition is taking place at the renowned exhibition area Ventura Lambrate during the biggest and most important fair for furniture design, Salone Internazionale del Mobile (April 8 - 13, 2014).

Within the scope of this year‘s Berlin Design Selection, Milan will get to see a curated selection of design works by various successful young designers from Berlin. The products range from flamboyant lights to tables with artistic, experimental surfaces. As a special highlight, the multi-awarded, internationally known designer Werner Aisslinger presents two of his newest creations for the first time — a premiere that shouldn‘t be missed by anyone interested in design.

On top of that, Berlin design will be embedded in an especially imaginative frame: With the renowned, multi-awarded design bureau COORDINATION being responsible for scenography, the Berlin Milano 2014 exhibition is going to convince with its content and aesthetics.

The following products will be shown at Ventura Lambrate:

.the collar by CIMCIMA. is a high-quality design lamp that merges elegance with functional sophistication. The lampshade is designed to either flood the ceiling or to illuminate the floor. .the ito issue is CIMCIMA.‘s answer to material efficiency, stability and flexibility in a single form. Every lamp of the .ito series can be individually shaped due to a special metal core inside the cable coating and can be changed and reshaped by hand at any time. All members of the .ito series are equipped with the newest LED-Chip-On-Board technology.

-

With Tilt Top Flip Sellin from COORDINATION created a sculptural side light that transforms from an atmospheric light object to a directional reading light. Tilt Top highlights the hidden qualities of the used materials. A hinge invites to interact with the lamp‘s top – adding an analogue and classical feel to a high tech product.

For the ceramic-tables by Elisa Strozyk, different liquid glazes pool and mix together under the influence of rotation and blown air to leave traces of fluid movement and smoke-like patterns which are solidified in the heat of the kin.

Hopf, Nordins Antiprisms are lights folded from a single perforated titanium-ceramic (TiN) coated sheet of stainless steel. The folds provide stability and, by their perforations, trace the form with light into space. The luminous flux is optimised and shadow casting is much reduced. Astrahedra are an infinite sequence of lights that visualise the interstellar void, home of Dark Matter and Energy. Tabbed stainless steel elements are folded and joined invisibly along their inner edges with Japanese spring-steel clips and adhesive. The perforated folds, illuminated from within, trace the true distance between astronomic objects - the lights’ corners.

Voronoi diagrams are partitions of an area into convex polygons. Depending on your choice of contour and height, Voronoi Cells tables by Hopf, Nordin evolve as transparent and lightweight load-bearing truss, consisting of closed and open cells. Each cell is CNC-bent from perforated stainless steel. The cells are bonded with a structural adhesive or riveted. The weight of the glass top provides additional rigidity.

The inspiration behind BLOW by Ruben der Kinderen are contemporary products that have, for many, unknown production processes. The PET bottle is taken as an example and its automated production process is re-imagined into a manual one. This allows the creation of new and unique products as well as giving an insight into the production process. Heating a Preform (PET tube) and by manually injecting air by pumping, a modern glassblowing is achieved from which these vases are a first design.

The Bushcraft Series by Ruben der Kinderen is an ongoing series of products inspired by bushcraft survival techniques. The pieces are constructed as a modular system that you can assemble without screws or glue, thus its stability is based purely on the forces of nature. In cooperation with furniture maker StijlZo, Ruben der Kinderen designed and manufactured this first series of stools and side tables.

Strictly geometric, almost constructivist, light, solid and substantial: The Steel Stands by Sebastian Scherer are inspired by the architecture of the industrial era. The stackable construction of three identical triangles is lasered from one steelplate and thus slighty flexible. Stability is provided on the one hand by two folded branches and on the other hand by the fixing with the tabletop. The combination looks easy and unpretentious. At the same time it gives as much space for legs as possible. Choose either solid ash tree or an mdf tabletop, their slender borders correspond best with the filigree steel construction.

-
Designed and produced using locally sourced sustainable materials, LOCKWOODs Eclipse and Europa lamps utilise a series of concentric, laser-cut wooden fibreboard rings to create an enchanting shadow moiré effect on surrounding walls and surfaces. Drawing on influences ranging from the austere minimalism of high European Modernism to the ancient craftsmanship of Japan, Simon Lockwood‘s lamps are a profound exploration of light, shadow and their endlessly fascinating interplay.

Crossboard by LOCKWOOD was inspired by the shelving systems from the late 60s & 70s. Crossboard combines the aesthetic qualities of hardwood with an ingenious and minimalist assembly system reminiscent of Japanese carpentry joints. The clean-lined solid oak shelves are complimented by lacquered oak dowels that create a dynamic yet not overstated form.

hettler.tüllmann present their new Rattan & Wicker series. Rattan with a new twist: The versatility of rattan allows for both structural strength and organic freedom. The material can be given shape, but the material can also prove to be its own guide. Rattan’s warm, light nature, its high stability but especially its quality as a sustainable resource makes it attractive to use in a variety of design approaches.

Poltrona COLLOSEUM and Coffetable & Lighting Sculpture ATOMIUM are parts of the Europe Collection by Werner Aisslinger. The European heritage for future generations on a world wide scale will be the enormous diversity and quality of cultural goods throughout European history. Quality of materials and manufacturing creates new usable furniture with cultural quality – a kind of furniture souvenirs which people all over the world keep as European icons. The multi-awarded Studio Aisslinger is a highlight of this year’s Milan exhibition.

Design Miami/Art Basel

Design Miami is the global forum for design. Each fair brings together the most influential collectors, gallerists, designers, curators and critics from around the world in celebration of design culture and commerce. Occurring alongside the Art Basel fairs in Miami, USA each December and Basel, Switzerland each June, Design Miami has become the premier venue for collecting, exhibiting, discussing and creating collectible design.

This year, Design Miami (Dec 2th - 8th) returns with its largest and most international gallery program to date. Featuring 37 galleries overall - 31 in the main exhibition program and six in the On/Site program for solo exhibitions of new work – this year‘s participants have been invited from ten different countries, including first time exhibitors from Russia and Lebanon. Design Miami‘s gallery selection represents a broad range of specialist areas, from late 19th century art pottery, through masterworks of the mid 20th century to the most exciting developments at the cutting edge of contemporary design.

Design collective and series Inventory presents their fourth exhibition, TIME, as part of Art Basel Miami Beach 2013. TIME will debut in the Design District on November 26th, 2013, with events lasting through the entirety of Basel until its duration on December 8th.

As a multidisciplinary exhibit combining a broad range of mediums, TIME explores the concept of time and the different ways in which it can be formatted and understood. Though time is ultimately a man-made idea—useful to define might actually be movement—it is this very fact that renders it special and worth exploring through design: it speaks not only to its own fragility, but to humanity’s. The disparate designers in TIME are inspired by a range of materials and ideology, but find themselves connected through their awareness of objects’ functions as signifiers of particular, emotional spaces in time.

The collective representation of Berlin‘s design companies will provide the Miami exhibition with a variety of design products that are supposed to inspire the overseas design market. Whether clean minimalism, sustainability concepts or simple elegance – the pieces selected by a jury bear the potential to establish Berlin‘s design as a distinct category and to expand its presense overseas.

Among others, the following products will be shown within the scope of Design Miami:

45 kilo shows Hang Jack, a hand soldered and polished multiple socket that can be hung up to fit into your working or living surroundings will turn electricity and wiring into something you no longer want to hide. With Summer Bowls, the studio presents a series of aluminium/corian storage containers that were inspired by the colors and tastes of ice cream. Hallo Work, another piece by 45 kilo, is a wall mounted light for working situations and is a redesign of the ‚potency‘ lamp by Jean Prouvé. Hallo Work is adjustable in height and direction but maintains the simplicity of its predecessor.

Berlinord‘s Tools You Light is a collection of table lamps created in collaboration with two manufacturers in Berlin and Brandenburg. The idea was to visualize two traditional crafts techniques, woodturning and metal spinning by a simple formal transformation. The lampshade is shaped by spinning an aluminum sheet over a tool in the negative form turned in beech wood.

Geisterfaust by BIEST is a minimalist solution for a mobile chamber. This living box is built up of prefabricated modules so that you can assemble it everywhere without much effort. This architectural mantle wants to be part of something. It wants to be a chamber on its own, but a chamber that is flexible in any situation and that can be implemented in a larger room.

Birgit Severin presents Ashes, vases with a 3D printed surface. Flowers and fruit are symbols of youth, beauty and enjoyment. At the same time due to their short life cycle, they are subject of decay and thus metaphorically represent ephemerality. The process of withering and vanishing has often been addressed in 17th century Flemic Vanitas paintings. Ashes reinterprets this subject in the context of modern home equipment by using modern technologies like 3D printing.

Coordination is exhibiting Higher Desk, a minimalist elevated working desk for reading, putting down notes or working on mobile electronic devices. Alternating sitting and standing during workflow is widely recommended. Higher Desk is perfectly suitable for confined environments: with its short, adjustable leg it‘s designed to extend any existing desk or table. Optionally, it can be leaned against walls or shelves.

Hybrids by Fons Hickmann m23 are 3D objects. Hybrid intensities are created through the fusion of seemingly contradictory objects. Through superficial dialectic this provokes a confrontation with stereotypes and aesthetics of today’s cultures. The cultural background of the beholder plays an essential role in decoding and evaluation of what is seen. The series of sculptures are an ironic play on the perceptions and expressions of the definition of home.

hettler.tüllmann‘s Cork Tables are made of pressed smoked cork. Cork is won from the outer bark of the cork oak tree which renews itself every ten years. These trees prefer dry and unfertile ground and help protect hot dry countries from expanding deserts. The Cork Tables are available in three sizes; they are hollow on the inside with storage space once the metal tabletop is lifted.

Joa Herrenknecht‘s Kogi are lamps created out of very light paper modules (Tyvek) and formed in reduced shapes, thus seemingly hanging down from the ceiling like crystals. In the dark, the paper structure changes from abstract geometrical paper sculptures, to luminous, warm shapes of light. Each lamp has been silk screened by hand and shows a gradient. All lamps can be folded flat by using a magnetic system. The Nest lamp, also by Joa Herrenknecht, is made from a milled steel cylinder, which has been precisely laser cut with a timeless graphical pattern resembling a branching grid structure. Glowing through this structure from inside out, the soft dimmable light creates a floating light carpet around the object.

Maria Volokhova‘s Still Life Stories is a series of multipurpose porcelain food containers, that interpret classical Vanitas paintings in a contemporary manner. Still Life Stories straddles the border between art and design, pure aesthetics and functionality. It is intended to facilitate an experimental dinner party, by opening new ways of experiencing the meal.

VDI-2860 The Worker by Pascal Howe is s the first part of the collection VDI 2860. VDI is the official abbreviation of the German Engineers‘ Association and 2860 refers to the guideline, which describes the prerequisites a machine needs to fulfil to be classed as a robot. The Worker a fusion between an object and a lamp and shows the visual point of view of Howe‘s space philosophy.

DeTour Hong Kong

Following the exhibitions in Taiwan and Shanghai, the last stop of the Berlin Design Selection Tour is going to be DeTour Hong Kong, that had initially opened its doors to public in 2004. It will take place from November 29th to December 8th in Central Oasis. For ten days, the main event will be accompanied by nearly a hundred of alliance and satellite exhibitions across the Hong Kong island, providing extensive presense and engaging the public in celebrating creativity.

The 2013 edition of DeTour will present original, bold and stimulating ideas by local and international designers. The event is organized by Hong Kong Ambassadors of Design, the Hong Kong Design Centre and PolyU Jockey Club Design Institute for Social Innovation.

The collective representation of Berlin‘s design companies will provide the Asian tour exhibitions with a variety of design products that are supposed to inspire the Asian design market. Whether clean minimalism, sustainability concepts or simple elegance – the pieces selected by a jury bear the potential to establish Berlin‘s design as a distinct category and to expand its presence in the Asian area.

Among others, the following products will be shown within the scope of DeTour Hong Kong:

bel+bo alias Jeannine van Erk is going to present cocon malade & boule malade, a series of hand-made unique lamps that are characterized by a warm, atmospheric light. The production of these lamps is one of the fascinating factors: Pigment-coated gauze bandages are wrapped around balloons by hand, and then get treated with a special hardening substance.

Cognosco is showing Trivets, a selection of UV-printed ceramic tiles, that can be used as coasters or wall tiles. The architect/photographer Amelie von Oppen designed over 500 motives that show famous landmarks of Berlin and other German cities as well as a selection of still life photographs and other design lines created by the graphic designer Christina Peil.

Gretchen presents the Tango series of leather ware and accessories, among which is the Tango Pouch, that has been awarded with the Red Dot Award. Avant-garde shapes and dedication to detail make up the driving force behind the Tango series.

Harris / Kohl show their spice mill M2. Its heart consists of two ceramic grinding discs; the mechanism is made of stainless steel. Thanks to the patented construction, M2 is ideal for grinding salt, pepper and spices of all kinds. Unlike conventional mills, it translates the movement of “crushing between hands”. The shape supports this motion and makes the handling easier.

llot llov exhibit AMF, Matt and TEA. AMF alias Assah, Mata and Fide are three vases, which resemble oversized chess figures. They are produced by the traditional process of metal spinning. The trio is inspired by the 100-yearold collection of templates found on the shelves of a metal spinning factory. Matt is a lighting element with the ability to dynamically adapt itself according to the individual needs of its user, changing its appearance with the place of installation. TEA consists of three sculptures: Thomas, Edison and Alva offer an arty option to decorate a wall. Their eccentric shapes have been adapted from high voltage insulators.

With No Cardboard, Philipp Käfer is showing a furniture piece made of aluminium, but resembling corrugated cardboard. Despite of its light weight, No Cardboard‘s characterizing feature is a special stability that enables the object to sustain a weight of up to 400 kilograms.

Pokket GmbH shows Pokket Mixer, a mobile music DJ-mixing device. The gadget needs two music players, for example an mp3 player and a mobile phone. An electrical connection or batteries are not necessary.

Walachei, founded by Erik van Buuren, is represented by the organic shower gels RS 100 and EB 200. They scent of tangerine, lavender and honey (RS 100), respectively rose geranium and vanilla (EB 200). After a long day or an exiting night out, the natural fragrance of RS 100 invites you to relax, while EB 200 stimulates your senses for a perfect start into the day. The creamy gel transforms into fine pored foam, which does not dehydrate but optimally nurtures the skin. RS 100 and EB 200 contain Berlin-grown honey and are biodegradable organic cosmetics on vegetable ba

In its 2013 edition, the International Design Festival will be a national event, opening the participation not only for the City of Buenos Aires but the entire country.

The International Design Festival also proposed as a meeting place for leaders of the international design. The last edition was attended by leading international designers like Eames Demetrios (USA), Alberto Montt, Piano and Francisco Luis Galvez (Chile), Ronaldo Fraga (Brazil), Peter Segreto (Brazil), Jorge Frascara (Argentine residing in Mexico), Julien De Sousa (France), among other prominent figures in the community.

The spectrum of Berlin’s companies’ common presentation is stretching from surface structures for 3D-printed objects to elaborate luminaires and ecologically produced furniture.

Among others, the following products will be shown at the Buenos Aires International Design Festival:

45 kilo, founded in 2007, presents Ray Glasses, crystal handmade glasses break the sunlight in a spectrum of fine lines, creating a pattern on the table surface. Each glass is a unique item. White Table, made by 45 kilo as well, is the most simple and functional table you can imagine. The 6 mm surface lends the tabe an elegant look while also making it waterresistant and stable.

With Reverse Decay, the designer Birgit Severin is showing a surface structure for 3D-printed objects, that consist of two overlying geometrical layers. One of them is only slightly attached to the other and separates from it through interaction. Over time, one layer pattern is transforming into the other. For Ashes, Severin is also using 3D technology.

Alice von Stockhausen shows Light Drop Vaiations, which are interchangeable lamp parts that can be assembled to satisfy individual needs. Lasso by dookke:design is a three-dimensional luminaire. A complex web of mini-sculptures constitutes its basic geometry. Each minisculpture is made of high-class acryl glass. The interlocking of these elements makes up its spatial volume.

hettler:tüllmann put sustainability on their agenda. The collective is showing Recycled Leather Chair & Cork Tables, furniture made of compostable or recycled materials. Alongside of its natural haptics, these materials were chose for their utilization and for the way they are obtained. The cork tables, which are hollow on the inside, come in three sizes and offer additional storage under the metal plates.

Studio Joa Herrenknecht (founded 2012) presents a range of different design objects. Among them are parts of the ‘Grow’ collection, items shown: ‘ISLA’, a handtufted carpet, ‘Phases’, a collection of vases and ‘Toro’, a flowerpot for climbing plants. All of the three designs show the fusion of fresh vivid colors and clear cut, geometric but playful design, which is the form language of the Studio. The young designer also exhibits two lamps from the series ‘Nest’ – which won the red dot award 2012, for their delicate design and gentle juxtaposition of light and shadow.

Asia tour station #1: Taiwan Designers’ Week

The Asia Tour starts with the Taiwan Designers’ Week (TWDW), that will take place from September 27th to October 6th 2013 in the Taipei Expo Park. Founded in 2007, the annual event TWDW is the biggest non-governmental design exhibition in Taiwan. This year’s slogan is „Around – Ideas within life“.

Each year, over 200 local & international designers with diverse backgrounds have joined TWDW exhibitions creating original works, including industrial designers, graphic designers, interior designers and fashion designers. TDWD has been working on gradual improvement of the quality and content of the event and on stimulating positive interaction between local and overseas designers.

The collective representation of Berlin’s design companies will provide the Asian tour exhibitions with a variety of design products that are supposed to inspire the Asian design market. Whether clean minimalism, sustainability concepts or contemplative sculptures – the pieces selected by the jury undoubtedly bear the potential to establish Berlin’s design as a distinct category and to expand its presence in the Asian sector.

Among others, the following products will be shown within the scope of the Taiwan Designers’ Week:

bel+bo alias Jeannine van Erk is going to present cocon malade, a series of hand-made unique lamps that are characterized by a warm, athmospheric light. The production of these lamps is one of the fascinating factors: Pigment-coated gauze bandages are wrapped around balloons by hand, and then get treated with a special hardening substance.

Cognosco is showing a selection of UV-printed ceramic tiles, that can be used as coasters or wall tiles. The architect/photographer Amelie von Oppen designed over 500 motives that show famous landmarks of Berlin and other German cities as well as a selection of still life photographs and other design lines created by the graphic designer Christina Peil.

Gretchen presents the Tango series of leatherware and accesoires, among which is the Tango Pouch, that has been awarded with the Red Dot Award. Avantgarde shapes and dedication to detail make up the driving force behind the Tango series.

With „No Cardboard“, Philipp Käfer is showing a furniture piece made of aluminium, but resembling of corrugated cardboard. Despite of its light weight, No Cardboard’s characterizing feature is a special stability that enables the object to sustain a weight of up to 400 kilograms.

Pokket GmbH shows Pokket Mixer, a mobile music DJ-mixing device. The gadget needs two music players, for example an mp3 player and a mobile phone. An electrical connection or batteries are not necessary.

Sao Paulo Design Weekend starting today!

First station of the Berlin Design Selection tour is going to be the Design Weekend that will take place in Sao Paulo on August 15th to 18th. With its numerous exhibitors and a big variety of events, the festival is considered the biggest of its kind in Latin America. Strategic placement of public and private Design Weekend events in museums, galeries, studios and parks provides for a comprehensive presense in the megacity Sao Paulo.

Sao Paulo Design House ((c) Design House)

For Berlin presentation, Design House was acquired as a local partner. The exhibition is going to be at a historic building in a design affine central area of the city and thus in the heart of the Design Weekend.

Because of the archaic setting, the event will be more than an exhibition. It’s going to be a design experience, in conceptual, functional and aesthetic aspects. A city like Sao Paulo, in which past and present come together in such an intense way, sets an exciting stage for Berlin’s designers’ versatile ideas. The parallel to Berlin is unmistakable, since it is also a history-charged and at the same time modern city.
The spectrum of Berlin’s companies’ common presentation is stretching from surface structures for 3D-printed objects to elaborate luminaires and ecologically produced furniture.

Among others, the following products will be shown at the Sao Paulo Design Weekend:

With isla, nest, phases and toro, Joa Herrenknecht presents different objects, among which is a carpet made of handwoven wool, as well as modular flower pots for flowers and climbing plants.
